Ridges Mountain Management

Rock Formation at Ridges Mountain

Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve is located west of Asheboro in Randolph County. The Natural Heritage Inventory of Randolph County lists Ridges Mountain as a "State" significant site (one of the best in the State) due to its high quality natural communities, significant rare species and large area of continuous habitat. Ridges Mountain is also historically significant as it was occupied by both Native Americans and early settlers.  The integrity of the Ridges Mountain area is threatened by timbering and development.

In 2000, the N.C. Zoo and the Greensboro-based Piedmont Land Conservancy worked together to acquire 180 acres of Ridges Mountain. In collaboration with partners such as the Conservancy and the North Carolina Natural Heritage Program, the Zoo manages Ridges Mountain for recreational and educational activities, wildlife corridor connection, conservation and research.  Ridges Mountain Nature Preserve has controlled public access for activities such as hiking, scouting and environmental education.

To schedule an outing please contact the N.C. Zoological Park at 336-879-7401 or the Piedmont Land Conservancy at 336-691-0088.
