NC Zoo Birthday Party FAQ

What is the reservation policy?

Changes to and cancellations are allowed up to two weeks of the birthday party date.  All cancellations well be charged a $50 fee, regardless of the reason.  Cancellations made less than two weeks fromt he birthday party fee will not receive a refund in any amount.

What if my number of guests change?

No refunds are given for guest who do not show up.  YOu have up to two weeks before the party to change your reservations.  After that, you are respnsible for the payment regardless of attendance.  We strongly recomment wording yourRSVP so that the deadline is clear.  If you have more people show up for th party, you will be charged $10 for each addiotnal guest.  Any more than 25 guests in the space will be turned away due to fire code restrictions.

I am a zoo member.  Can I use my guest passes for some of the adults?
No. 
You receive a 15% discount.  Other than that, all adults and children must be included in the count.

Is the birthday child included in the total count?
Yes.

Many of my guests have memberships.  Do I have to include them in the count?
Yes. 
Our birthday party room can only seat 25 maximum per the fire code of the space. No extra guests are allowed.  Members must be included in count.

Where is the birthday party held?

The birthday party is located in the RTI Play and Learn Center in the back of Nature Play area. You can ask at the North American gate where the area is located and will be provided a map. A birthday party staff person will meet your group at the chalk wall inside the play area at the time of your party. 

What happens if it rains?

Birthday party reservations are held rain or shine.  Please let all your guests know ahead of time to check the weather and be prepared for whatever it entails. 

The zoo is open 364 days a year regardless of rain. Occasionally, the zoo does close due to inclimate conditions such as ice.  In the event that your birthday party fall on a date that the zoo has to close, you can have the option of rescheduling your event or receiving a refund in the full amount.  If you are unsure, please check the website and the front page will advertise closures. 

Can I bring additional food?
No. 
Since the party is held inside the zoo we require that events use the NC Zoo catering department for food.Our catering service has a lunch box menu specific for birthday parties in mind. It includes a sandwich of your choice (hamburger, hot dog, pb&j or ham) and a small bag of chips and animal cookies for $5/person. If you are interested in adding a lunch to your party please indicate at time of registeration. 

Can I bring additional decorations?
Yes. 
Helium balloons are NOT allowed.  We provide balloons for bouncing, kicking, throwing, etc., but they must stay in the birthday room.  This is for the safety of our wildlife.  Any additional decorations must be put up during the allocated time slot.  Additional time is not available.

Is there a place I can store my cake or presents before or after the party?

No.  Due to limited space and other events there is no place to store your party supplies.

Can I have the party for more than one child?
Yes. 
There is no additional fee if you would like to have the party for more than one person.  In order to proceed with this option, you will need to contact the reservationists after looking at the calendar availability. Birthday cake is included and will have both names on the one cake unless specified and for an additional fee for a 2nd cake. 

Can I request animals for my animal encounter?

No. We cannot take requests for specific animals for your encounter, guarantee any paritcular animals to be at your party. Frequent animals include hedgehog, prairie dogs, snake, turtle, and bearded dragon. 

Can you give me more details about what happens at the party?
Yes. 
Here is a rough agenda, keeping in mind that every group is a little different:
Free play and activities, approx 15 minutes (ex. balloons, hula hoops, and ring toss, are a few of the free play opportunities; there are also puzzles, crayons, and bubbles)
Education program, approx 20-30 minutes (depending on party choice)
Birthday host-led activity(depending on party choice), approx 20 minutes
Live animal program, approx 10 minutes
Cake and ice cream, approx 10 minutes
Time for presents (parent-led), approx 20 minutes
