Pollinator Party
There will be 6 Stations with hands-on activities for guests to rotate through.
Stations:
1. Pollination Demonstration Game. Children can participate in becoming a pollinator and collecting pollen from flowers and seeing how pollen is then exchanged.
2. Make a pollinator out of loose parts. What should a pollinator have to do it’s job? Wings? Legs? Place to store pollen? Ways to find pollen? Ways to collect pollen?
3. Take a closer look at some cool bugs from the NC Zoo including some blue beetles who have a cool survival trick. We will have visits from some of our Animal Ambassador invertebrates throughout the day. When they are not available, take a closer at some pollinator displays by magnifying them under our video microscope.
4. Learn about the monarch butterfly’s life cycle by making a pony bead bracelet. Each color bead represents a different stage. This activity is designed for school age children due to choking hazard.
5. Illustrate the monarch’s life cycle by using colored pasta to glue to paper plates to make your own life cycle wheel. This activity is designed for our preschool and younger friends.
6. How can you help pollinators (and birds)? See our interactive quiz. Throw mud at things we should NOT do for pollinators/birds. If you participate, you will be give NC native wildflower seeds. If you get all the right answers, you will be give NC native milkweed seeds. This game is designed for school age children up through adults. Younger children can draw how they can help pollinators.
Community partners will be available from the Native Plant Society, Beyond Plastics, and UNCG students who will interpret in ASL.
