Animal Care and Wellbeing

With over 1,700 individual animals of more than 200 species, providing the best care to the animals at North Carolina Zoo is a complex task undertaken by a passionate team of highly skilled animal care & animal health professionals.

Wellbeing is a holistic concept considering whether an animal is comfortable, healthy, and happy. We use the science of welfare to inform and assess animal wellbeing. Our animal care professionals ensure our animals thrive through feeding nutritional well-balanced diets, providing safe and stimulating environments, training for voluntary participation in husbandry and medical procedures, and implementing preventive health care, routine health check-ups, and medical procedures. All of these practices are informed by research and up-to-date standards of best practices. Together, these methods ensure the optimal well-being of animals housed at the North Carolina Zoo.
