Forest Glade Habitat

Ground was first broken for the Africa region in the spring of 1976, and the grand opening of the original five habitats took place in the summer of 1980. Today, it’s home to a multitude of habitats, including those showcasing chimpanzees, giraffes, gorillas, zebras and, of course, elephants.

Some of the world’s most enigmatic and playful creatures call Lemur Island home. At this habitat there is one species of lemur, the red-ruffed (Varecia rubra).
A large community of chimpanzees call Kitera Forest home. They’re very social and don’t mind walking up to the glass to greet visitors.
These wild pigs are widely seen through the rainforests, thickets and savannas of western and central Africa. The animals get their name from their reddish color and because they are usually found near sources of water.
This spacious area of grass has large herds of elephants, rhinos, antelope, and gazelles. The animals are free to graze on the plants that cover the 40-acre habitat.
No visit to our Africa region is complete unless you see our lions. These majestic cats will leave you roaring for more.
